I was cleaning out photos on my iPhone today, and realized I have a LOT of pictures of people making music, listening to music, talking about music. Then I got email from Bandcamp, a platform where musicians can upload music for streaming and purchase. It said that on the first Friday of each month they’re waiving their revenue share of sales so more goes to musicians. From their announcement:
… On March 20, 2020, we waived our revenue share in order to help artists and labels impacted by the pandemic. The Bandcamp community showed up in a massive way, spending $4.3 million on music and merch—15x the amount of a normal Friday— helping artists cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and so much more. It was truly inspiring.
But the pandemic and its impact on the music community aren’t over, so on May 1, June 5, and July 3 (the first Friday of each month), we’re waiving our revenue share for all sales on Bandcamp, from midnight to midnight PDT on each day.
I have a couple of friends with (relatively) new music out, so what better place to give them a little love and invite you to share your new music finds, than a Tuesday Top Comments! Grab a tasty beverage and hop across the story break for some easy listening!
Here at Top Comments we welcome longtime as well as brand new Daily Kos readers to join us at 10pm Eastern. We strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I bring you a four course feast of new music (all album links go to Bandcamp, where you can listen to the entire album for free, and purchase if you choose). The first three are bands/musicians I first came to know in the virtual music scene of Second Life, but who I now also see via Facebook Live and occasionally in person! The fourth is a local friend and all-around excellent person. Let’s get started…
First up is Sacramento-based Jon Larson. Long a favorite of mine, I own a bunch of his music and was excited to learn he’d released his latest album Songs For Tired Ears just a few days ago! Even better, for the duration of this pandemic he is donating the proceeds for all music sales on Bandcamp to José Andrés organization World Central Kitchen. John doesn’t have official video up for this album yet, but I did find an early pre-release version of the track “A Mending Wave”:
Next up, another of many musicians I know by two names… their real name, and that of their Second Life avatar. Philadelphia-based Twinghost aka Eric Steven has a voice I could listen to for hours and I’ve had the pleasure of hearing in person several times. His latest Stay Groovy I only learned of this today, so I am making the executive decision it is Recent! Enjoy “Third Street Hustle”:
My next group The Follow has such a big following in Second Life I’ve had to give up seeing them there because it’s always so crowded… but that’s OK because they come to most of the music Jams I get to attend, AND while it’s Pandemic Season they’re playing Facebook Live concerts every Sunday night at 7pm. Based in Columbia MO, this self-described panoramic rock band features three of the most wonderful people you’ll ever meet. Their latest album is Wilderness, and I had a hard time choosing just one track to share here. So I went with “Filled From The Inside”, which has an Official Video:
My last treat for you tonight is local-to-me Alastair Moock, who says he makes music for the ENTIRE family. Social activist in the Pete Seeger mold, when schools are in session he does social justice, language arts and songwriting assemblies. His latest album Be a Pain: An Album for Young (and Old) Leaders was released just last month, and I do hope you enjoy the title track!
That’s what I’ve got for you tonight… what new music finds do you have to share with us? Please share in the comments, after perusing the trio of Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures that BeninSC has compiled for us!!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From mark schroeder:
We receive this fine comment from Dave in Columbus, with “as good a metaphor for the Republican mindset as I can recall in a very long time.” (Quotation for mark’s words.)
From Gaelsdottir:
I would like to submit this comment by Garman Lord, in this diary by Egberto Willies. It had me laughing so hard I scared my cats.
It's the "meta". Compiling a list of the names people have come up with for Trump. then christening them as he has done... sometimes a turn of phrase is simply perfection, and deserves to be so noted :-)
