A Forbes article argues that point and I must say, that is my fear also, even as I write this article which can be seen as a social media long message.
The Forbes article cites Marianne Williamson’s tweet:
It’s not just intended to make people afraid to protest. Give him four more years and we’ll be afraid to tweet.
And then comments:
If the federal action in Portland was aimed at scaring potential protesters off the streets, the reaction on Twitter to last night’s footage is likely helping the government in this aim. Most comments appear to simply state that the government (or America as a whole) is authoritarian and/or fascist, with very few suggesting ways of acting constructively in response to such a possibility.
I must say that that is exactly my reaction to the 4 years of Trump’s crimes. With the exception of the impeachment trial and the Black Lives Matter demonstrations, there has been “a lot of talk” but no action against the dismantling of the USA democracy.
I always wonder how people can only “be surprised” about things they should not be surprised about anymore and fail to engage in discussing : “What do we do now?”
In that spirit, I must say I was happy and want to also talk about what can be done. Obviously, the Oregon officials need to fight back and I am happy to read this morning that the “Oregon Attorney General Sues to Stop Federal Arrests of Portland Protesters”.
But still, what can WE do? The answer I get all the time, everywhere is: “vote them out”. Well, you only get a chance at that every 4 years. Our democracy is already in shambles right now.
So, what do WE do now?
