The pre-taped/Zoom model was all well and good for a pandemic year.
But Political Conventions are not for the voting public. They are and SHOULD BE for the couple thousand party loyalists who are tapped by local party functionaries to go on their once-in-a-lifetime trip to a large city in a swing state to carry out a pre-scripted rubber-stamping of a foregone conclusion.
They are also supposed to run grotesquely overtime instead of running in a tight two hours and change.
Yeah, I ain’t buying it either.
I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of hybrid going forward. A live element for roll call and balloon drops, with many more taped and remote segments. If the nominee is good at stemwinder oratory, do the speech for the plenary. Otherwise, this format suited Joe Biden very well, and if it’s that kind of nominee, you can go with that. You can suit the convention to the candidate’s strengths.
