Yesterday’s executive order or orders got a lot of ink and a lot of commentary---which means that something very simple and important may have gotten lost in all the fog:
Donald Trump just promised, if re-elected, that he will make permanent cuts to social security and medicare taxes.
This is a guy who flopped repeatedly whenever he was asked about his agenda for a second term. Nobody could get any specific policy item out of him. As far as I know, this is the one plank he’s finally articulated: permanent cuts to social security and medicare taxes. As far as I know, this right now constitutes his only coherent campaign promise.
But you’d be hard-pressed to even notice it in all the news. News articles that do mention his promise for permanent cuts mostly add it as an extra detail. This Washington Post article does it right, by stating this most important and most shocking detail as the article’s headline. That’s what we need to do: I think it is crucial that we dig out this one fact and spread it around the world. State it simply and directly, put it on display all by itself, post it by itself, Tweet it by itself, let everyone in the country see it and think about what it means:
Donald Trump just promised, if re-elected, that he will make permanent cuts to social security and medicare taxes.
Thus far, this is Donald Trump’s only coherent re-election platform.
