I have been reading statements around the Internet about him being the only president to ever be impeached twice.
Of course, that is quite true. But the facts are more damning.
In November, after he lost, someone posted the following graphic on FB. I have no idea who posted it, but I do know it was posted to be shared, and that it went viral, as, I am sure, it was intended to. I would provide attribution if I had any idea who created it. I would also ask them to update it with the two additional facts described, below. That is beyond my graphics skillset. It would be two more circles just including him. How dark would that be!
As the graphic shows, in our history, we have had 13 one-term presidents. He is one of those. We have had 5 presidents who lost the popular vote. Yes, he is one of those, too. Finally, we have had four presidents who were impeached or who resigned. Yes, that’s him.
Of all of those, he is the only one who ticked ALL of those boxes. There was never another one-term US President who lost the popular vote and who was also impeached.
Now he has become the only president to be impeached twice.
But don’t forget: he is also the only president to lose the popular vote twice.
His vote deficit over the two elections is nearly ten million votes. (Per CNN, he lost the popular vote by 2,868,691 votes in 2016, and - also per CNN - by 7,060,115 votes in 2020, for a total of 9,928,806.)
You can’t set a greater record as a loser than that. He is the biggest loser in the history of American politics.
But his childishness and pettiness are the things that, for me, take his losership to the ultimate level. In that, he lost in a way no other president ever has.
In your conversations, please help us shine a light on the magnitude of his failures. Twice impeached isn’t all of it by any means. He stands alone as a presidential failure, as a loser. For the sake of our country, I hope no one else ever comes close. We can’t afford it. No country could.
Finally, there is his criminality. His accountability may not be allowed to end with Congressional action. I know you all know. He can still add that final circle — of the only president to be convicted of crimes while president. Maybe the most important circle of all.
Thanks for reading.
(Correction: In the comment threads, wgreview pointed out that “John Quincy Adams and Benjamin Harrison both lost the popular vote twice.” Maybe we can look at it as separate losses each of the 60 times the courts ruled that his lawsuits after this election were without merit? In that case, John Quincy Adams and Benjamin Harrison both lost the popular vote twice, Trump 62 times, unless we also count the two defeats in the Supreme Court? 64?)
