EDIT: Rarely do I yield to the platitudes of people who think that somehow I might be giving some delicate confederate southern flower the vapors by using a vaguely diminutive term to describe them here on this site. For the sake of avoiding being given yet one more warning by a site admin I’m doing so under EXTREME PROTEST.
I’ll be brutally honest here: I’m NOT a sports guy — my wife is the jock in our family. She grew up with two older brothers and had to immerse herself in all things sports at an early age out of survival, and it stuck. She ended up being a gymnast in her youth and now her phone goes off every few minutes with score updates from various apps... and now I get to watch games with her on the teevee on occasion as the good husband in order to demonstrate family cohesion, when I’d much rather be practicing my pentatonic scales or learning a new riff on one of my guitars, doing gardening, or....
But I digress. The point here is that recent events appear to be steeped in a failure to approach matters from a more fundamental perspective — a perspective that appeals to the more Neanderthal thought process. So, here goes:
Notwithstanding the fact that my opinion of professional sports is that many of the players should be wearing diapers instead of uniforms and the officials should be using white red-tipped canes instead of whistles, basic truths are still in play. For example, in football the Rams defeated the venerated Seattle Seahawks, 30-20, and the Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 48-37.
In basketball, the Houston Rockets proved that they really didn’t require James Harden at all to win over the San Antonio Spurs 109-105; and although Steph Curry put on his usual magic show, it’s still true that one man cannot carry an entire team effort and the Warriors were defeated by the Denver Nuggets 104-114.
Even in hockey, persistence can pay off: the San Jose Sharks won their season opener against the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 in a shootout.
Now I’ve seen games where players have run the football down the edge of the field and stepped out of bounds and the ref didn’t make the call. I’ve watched basketball games where King James sunk an elbow into a Warrior kidney right in front of a ref and he didn’t call a technical foul because you don’t want to piss off someone who’s worth a couple hundred million dollars. And we won’t even discuss all the mayhem I’ve seen in hockey games that have slipped by officiating for the sake of fan “entertainment”. But here are the hard facts, Bubba: during this past election, although Trump received 74,223,744 votes, Biden received 81,283,485 votes. That’s a difference of 7,059,741 votes AGAINST Mr. Trump. The electoral vote count was 306 -232 in Mr. Biden’s favor. Over 60 different courts, presided by judges appointed by McConnell himself have declared the election corruption free.
Or, put in terms most people who tried to take down our country last week can understand:
“THE PLAY HAS BEEN REVIEWED AND THE RULING ON THE FIELD STANDS...
YOUR . GUY . LOST.”
