Is telling Trump that the sure way to guarantee his conviction in the Senate impeachment trial is to pardon Capitol terrorists?
As WGN in Chicago reports, at least one of the coup conspirators has appealed to Trump for a pardon for his seditious acts and crimes.
The attorney for Jacob Chansley, one of the most prominent terrorists in the insurrection, appealed via press release for Trump to absolve the coward from consequence for his criminal acts. (Has anyone reading this learned of any statement from any of the terrorists willing to truly ‘own’ what they did? I know that I have not.)
The press release went on to describe just how ‘salt of the earth’ Chansley actually is, though it does not explain why — if he has such magnificent character — he should ever need a pardon, since certainly so exemplary a soul has nothing to fear going to trial. (I have not quoted the b.s. press release from that WGN story because it doesn’t merit quoting. You can see it at the above link if you wish.)
I am sure that other requests for pardon will be forthcoming from these jerks (if they have not been submitted already). But that isn’t the question of this diary.
None of those who ‘stormed’ the capitol deserve pardon, of course, and that may be seen from the approval ratings Trump now ‘enjoys.’ (politicalwire lists it at 29%, which begs the question, who tf are the 29% so stupid as to still support him?!)
At 29%, one would think that Republican Senators would have to be nuts to vote to acquit him, but I am sure that the minority would, if the voter were held today. But why are NONE of them are telling him that the surest way to GUARANTEE conviction is to pardon those criminals???
As it happens, I have an answer. It’s because none of them are leaders. It’s because their instinct is to circle wagons when one of their own is attacked. Even if the best and most credible path forward for that party is to repudiate and convict him.
No leaders. No integrity.
Thanks for reading.
