First, let me preface this by stating something that’s obvious to anyone who is aware of the Canada-US relationship and its history: in general, the Canadian government, especially the prime minister, is very circumspect in direct criticism of American presidents. There may be disputes about policies, couched in diplomatic terms that make it clear the government is pissed off at their American counterparts but it’s left unsaid. Even when relations are at a low ebb, the worst you’ll here is a PM or minister expressing “disappointment” or some such, and typically never regarding an internal US matter.
Today, that changed.
"What we witnessed was an assault on democracy by violent rioters, incited by the current president and other politicians.”.

Trudeau has now joined Angela Merkel and Boris Johnson and other leaders who have pointed the finger directly at Trump as being responsible for what happened, and using language to describe him and his actions that has previously been restricted to the corrupt leadership of what Trump would cheerfully call “shithole countries”.
