What comes next?
When we learn who was involved and the extent of their connectedness to all of the events surrounding the Big Lie and January 6, what will the consequences be?
I started thinking about this watching Liz Cheney stand in the well of the House and report that members present in the House knew. They knew. They tried to get the former guy to stop the insurrection. I suspect there are several Senators who knew, too, because the usual suspects have been conspicuously absent on the TV shows.
Will they be expelled from Congress? Will they be barred from running for any office again? Will they face charges for treason? How will we help their constituents if actions are taken against members of Congress?
What are appropriate consequences for betraying your country like this?
As a country, how will we respond? Is history a good guide here? Reconstruction after the Civil War had unintended consequences for a lot of citizens after all. Are there other countries who would serve as a good guide? There are lessons to be learned from immediate post-WWII Germany and Europe. Can we use the fallout from the 1/6 Committee to develop 5-, 10-, 25-, and 50-year plans as Japan did after WWII?
Is it possible that we’ll finally throw off the shackles of Reaganism after 40 years of backbreaking struggle for the working- and middle-classes in this country? I firmly believe that’s a large part of the reason we’re here in the first place.
I don’t have the answers. But, I don’t think it’s too early to start asking these questions. I don’t think it’s too early to start thinking about outcomes and consequences.
What comes next? What do we want? And, how do we get it?
