480K dead, but things may be getting better.
The pace of deaths and cases is declining. The numbers are still incredibly high, but they are going down. We haven’t had a day with over 200K cases in nearly a month and we just had three straight days of cases under 100K. That has not happened since the first week of November. However, since deaths lag cases, deaths will continue to surpass 3,000 a day, though we may have hit our peak a week or two ago. But these should begin to decline even further.

Currently averaging 20K deaths every 13.30 days (doesn’t include the time to reach first 20K). Death rate is increasing, though it appears we peaked a few weeks ago and are now declining. We are still at a record breaking pace of deaths. With cases staying at 100K-125K cases a day, the death rate is going to stay elevated for a while.

Case growth is slowing down quickly. This is the first time in a very long time that it will take over a week to diagnose 1M cases. We haven’t seen that slowdown since first week of November. The big variable is, how do the variants impact case growth and will we be able to vaccinate enough people to mitigate the variant growth?
