Hint: No one wins when women lose. Not the economy, not employers, not workers. Men don’t win, nor do children and families.
Women don’t want to replace you. We don’t want more. We don't want special treatment. And, most of all, we don’t want to repeat history. What do we want? Good question. We want what you want.
What do you want?
I’m betting it’s fair pay for doing your job: a job well done and the ability to move up based on performance.
I’m betting it’s not:
- Saying yes to your boss when it means giving into sexual harassment.
- Behaving in a way that suggests sexual favors can be “bought.”
- Performing at a lower level than opposite-sex counterparts to keep your job.
- Accepting less for doing more.
- Staying quiet.
I’m betting you want to take care of your family. Me too. If I don't have a family to care for, I should expect the same consideration as my colleagues who do.
Think. What makes sense? Locking out half the population from success or enabling everyone to get ahead? What makes more sense? Denying equality to some workers based simply on gender or ensuring everyone can contribute to the economy with the same opportunities to make and spend money.
Both men and women are raising families and pursuing challenging careers. We can all succeed and share in the “American Dream.” Together. Supporting each other, supporting those who earn positions with increased responsibilities, and celebrating their success.
And, as for those of us who haven’t been able to reach our goals – regardless of gender – bring us along. Education, training, certifications, exposure to the trades. There are many paths to success. Our job is to be sure they're available to everyone who wants or needs them.
It's not rocket science. But even if it is, the universe has room enough for us all.
