Maybe we should start with here is what they don't need. They don't need a curfew. The police do not need to tell taxpaying grown-ups when it's time to go home. They do not need to issue commands to their citizens. They don't need up-armored vehicles, or national guard troops. And they don't need to declare a peaceful gathering unlawful, an hour before their arbitrary deadline. They don’t need to employ any more tear gas, or pepper spray, or any other coercive measures.
They … WE … need to LISTEN!
What the protesters need, is to be heard — to to be very aware that they have been heard, and will be taken seriously. They need a platform ... a stage, and a sound system! (Maybe not the one shown, but … ) They need to invite the people to the stage, to take the mic and express their outrage at Daunte Wright's fate. Anyone who wants to speak should be allowed to go on for as long as the crowd is willing to listen. The police and the town council probably won't like what they're gonna hear ... but they need to be there, and shut up, and hear it — and the people saying it need some confidence that what they say will be taken seriously, that actions will be taken, and that changes will be made. Town Hall meetings, and follow-up meetings need to be scheduled to decide upon action items, and review their implementation. Those who run “the system” must either make it work for the people, or get out & make room for people who can.
"Justice for Daunte Wright" is an impossible illusion. In a just world, Daunte Wright would still be alive. So, don't even begin to imagine that what has been happening in Brooklyn Center can be "enforced" away! That can’t be done.
But maybe, we can listen, and change, and grow, and thereby put a real and meaningful end to to the injustices that brought on these events. Or, we can do this godforsaken dance all over again, sometime sooner than we probably expect, in Brooklyn Center, MN., or Brooklyn, NY, or some-damn-where else.
