This is admittedly a rant aggravated by personal frustration. I am having a problem with potatoes that I don’t remember having before.
A couple of years ago I moved to Northern Virginia. I am mostly happy with the move. I’m not thrilled with a 3 story townhouse but I like not having as much yard work. After living in Oklahoma and Texas, I love living in Blue Virginia. I don’t even complain much about the weather. But there is a fly in the ointment of my contentment — potatoes!
The potatoes I have been buying here are not good. I buy the cheap ones in 5 or 10 pound bags and half of them have green spots or start sprouting within a couple of days ofgettng them home. I buy the more expensive loose ones that you pick yourself and when I cut them I discover black spots or hollows in the middle. I buy the ones that are advertised as packaged ready to cook and they look wonderful until you cut them open. I buy them at Giant, Safeway, Harris Teeter and still have the same problem.
I have never had this problem before … in Illinois, California, Guam, New Mexico, New Jersey, Oklahoma or Texas and points in between. I admit that I was spoiled in Austin with the produce section at Central Market and HEB. But this is so odd. Is there a potato blight that I have not heard about? Have potatoes taken a sudden aversion to me and rot when I touch them. Are potatoes one of those food products that don’t sell well in Northern Virginia and there sit in their bin too long? Is it all Trump’s fault that basic food goes bad? Or are potatoes so upset with Manchin and Sinema that they are rotting in frustration?
I’m being facetious but I am truly frustrated and I need to rant because right now, potatoes are my grandkids’ favorite food. Does any one else have this problem?
Observations, suggestions, even laughter are welcome. But please don’t denigrate me or anyone who stops by. Disrespect is a rotten potato and I don’t need any more of those, thank you very much.
