In today’s San Francisco Chronicle, Journalism Professor Edward Wasserman decries what the Internet has done to his noble calling.
My DK User ID # is 207, because I signed up in 2003 on the first day that registration was required here. The reason I signed up was the breath of fresh air that I found, intelligent people with writing skills who were willing to challenge the bully pulpit of the major media outlets.
Here is the text of my LTE response to Mr. Wasserman’s column. I sent it today, so it may not see print, but fortunately I have alternatives to put my thoughts in front of others.
Time For A Blogger Ethics Panel
Edward Wasserman (Open Forum, July 13) looks down from his ivory tower at the chaotic mass of Internet bloggers and social media mavens, and he is appalled. Unlike his "old money" culture, these brash newcomers have no respect for his noble profession, which was once confined to people who could afford a printing press.
Now anyone with a computer can publish their thoughts, like the first generation of bloggers who pointed out in 2003 that the "Weapons of Mass Destruction" casus belli was a lie, while Mr. Wasserman's noble professionals were busy using their bully pulpit to sell that lie.
The horror.
