August 2021
Hey all - this will be a very short bucket with only one topic - this really weird bug I found on the clothesline Saturday. Never seen it before and will likely never see it again. In the time it takes to write this, I could go to BugGuide and poke around aimlessly and maybe come up with a family or something similar. If I still used iNaturalist, supposedly it or someone would ID before the day is done. Or this insect can be one of many mysteries that fill my life in the Florida woods.
Speaking of pop-up thunderstorms, Saturday night after seeing storm after storm pass across the Panhandle, shifting directions or fading to nothing, missing me, one formed here around 7PM and did not move for 2 hours. The rain gauge Sunday morning read 4.5 inches. Impressive ... the birdbath I emptied is overflowing, and no doubt the beaver down the hill is happy. They seem to know when rain is coming and double down on the dam rebuilds.
So, that's all for this Daily Bucket. Wait, a shout-out for TS Fred that may or may not reform as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico. The potential track has shifted west after days of pointing right to Tallahassee. As of Monday morning Fred is expected land at 7PM closer to Mexico Beach — which was wiped out and still recovering from Cat-5 Michael in Oct ‘18. So that’s 60 miles southwest of me but most the rain is on the east side. Windy.com says my area should see winds at 15 mph starting this afternoon with gusts to 35 and NWS says a few inches of rain to a foot. Tornados are possible when the air is so unsettled.
When this is published I’ll be taking ph to eye doctor and then sitting in a parking lot. Not a day when I really want to leave my woods and drive into town but there ya go. Hope to see you in comments with your nature observations.
