Anyone else sick of this bullshit?
I don’t know about anyone else, and maybe it’s my own “privilege” talking, but I consider the GOP’s “threat” to “push through legislation on their own when they are in the majority” to be a hollow one.
Seriously, what “legislation” do Republicans think they’re going to “push through” that anyone other than their billionaire/corporate/industrial owners are going to like? That won’t do what all Republican “legislation” does, viz., wreck the economy and harm the masses to appease the owners? That won’t do more damage than past Republican “legislation” has already done?
We already know and understand that the things the GOP base truly wants can’t be achieved legislatively, and that Republican lawmakers have never lifted a finger to give the base anything it wants, other than a couple of illegitimate SCOTUS Justices who might one day grant some of their vulgar authoritarian wishes. Does anyone really think that if there was anything else Republicans wanted to accomplish legislatively that they could accomplish legislatively, they wouldn’t have nuked the filibuster for that in 2017 or 2018?
For the most part, Republican campaign rhetoric doesn’t translate into anything that can actually be accomplished legislatively or administratively; to the extent it does, it’s either (a.) grounded in false premises and unrealistic expectations (e.g., implausible solutions to nonexistent problems); or (b.) the sort of thing that if anyone genuinely tried to legislate it the result would be so catastrophically harmful and destructive to so many people and/or the nation as a whole that doing so would be unthinkable even to the most cynical politician.
Which brings up the even more important question: Who are they really threatening?
Does anyone really believe that the answer to that question is Democrats, or the Democratic Party? What do Republicans think this “legislation” that they’re “threatening” to “push through” will do to Democrats? What do they think it’ll do to the public, workers, consumers, and the environment? They certainly aren’t “threatening” to do anything for the public, workers, consumers, or the environment, which is what Democrats are trying to do and Republicans are “threatening” to retaliate for, which leaves us with only one possible answer.
So, to Republicans who “threaten” to “push through legislation on their own when they are in the majority” I say, bring it the f*** on. It’s long past time to call their disgusting bluff.
