Seven or eight hundred letters so far.
I remember Kos saying that we had to leave it all on the road back when Obama was running for office. I believe that it is even more imperative now to do everything, EVERYTHING that each one of us can do to get out the vote.
If I keep up my pace of twenty a day, I will have written around four thousand letters to send by the due date in October.
I have written letters and postcards for several campaigns, but most are for Vote Forward. I have written some for Georgia, New Hampshire, Nevada and a congressional race in Washington where I live.
Vote Forward supplies printable forms that us volunteers are supposed to use to write our handwritten messages. I am not following that exactly, but I think I am going one better. Using their advice that the most effective message is a narrative; I have composed a letter that I print out. I add the greeting and closing by hand. I enclose my letter in a nice thank you note and write the address on the envelope. It will be obvious to the people receiving my letters that I am not just passing on something pre-fab from a political campaign.
This is my message:
I hope you don't mind getting this note from me.
I am very worried that turn out won't be high for this election in November. We get better people elected when LOTS of us vote.
This election is important because of inflation. No president of any party can control inflation. Presidents do not control the production, distribution, or prices on goods. But Congress CAN help Americans with our living expenses so we can cope with inflation.
Congress can:
-
pass the child tax credit,
-
lower prescription drug prices,
-
provide help with child care expenses,
-
fund affordable housing,
-
fund new industries that create good paying jobs
-
and more.
I do in-home care for disabled people and I have seen the effects of inflation. I know old people who can't afford prescriptions and disabled people who can't pay utilities. I help my clients out by paying for groceries out of my own pocket even though I have bills of my own. Too many Americans live paycheck to paycheck. We should not have old people and disabled people who can't afford their medications or their basic household expenses.
So I hope you will vote and please consider voting for candidates who are committed to using Congress to address the cost of living: drug costs, housing and childcare, creating good paying jobs.
Thank you for taking time to read this and best wishes.
I put my message in pretty thank you notes. The postage is running at about two hundred dollars a month.
I have a question. Would it be better to just give the two hundred dollars a month to voter registration and get out the vote campaigns? Or is letter-writing an effective way to GOTV and influence people toward the right candidates? I am already making about one hundred and fifty dollars a month in donations to various campaigns.
Please write few letters for Vote Forward: VoteForward (votefwd.org)
Thankyou,
Laura
