For the past year our family has experienced a succession of health related problems involving both physical and mental health issues. We are both retired, and my role in the family has inched its was from grandparent of a chronic runaway teen to a caretaker for an invalid spouse. Times being what they are we follow a number of Youtube channels for a little positive pickup. We watched one clip of an obese Trumper being asked to step out of the car by a patrolman, eventually being tased after giving the officer the entire sovereign citizen spiel. What a moron, right? I’ve seen any number of these traffic stops over the past several years.
Flash forward to today, when I receive a call from my sister (in another state which shall remain nameless; aw hell it’s VA) asking for some genealogical help dealing with our late mother’s side of the family, so she can declare herself a sovereign citizen, because she already is not a U.S. citizen because of some secret office in the state department in charge of a certain number of persons born in certain states between a set of certain dates… and on and on. This is a sister who, I swear to God, fell for the Nigerian prince scam. The rest of the family has long since learned to ignore this misguided soul, and I have ceased helping her financially for a number of years.
She believes anything and everything she hears on the internet. She is the youngest of six siblings, but still a grown middle aged woman. So why am I so disturbed by this? Anything I could suggest to the family would involve emotional reserves I simply don’t have. I’ve blocked her number. She is broke and far enough away that I doubt she would show up at our door, and I wouldn’t take her in if she did. Many of us have had to deal with Trump supporters in our families, but the extreme edge of cult behavior is upsetting when you start talking about secret rooms in DC where certain numbers of “special” people are …. I am too old for this shit.
