It seems that Florida Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler (of “I’m going after the LGBTQ community while my wife and I have a sexual affair with another woman” fame) is now under pressure to step down after being accused of rape.

Apparently DeSantis called for him to step down, and the County GOP Chairman Michael Thomason agrees, stating that Ziegler “has engaged in conduct that renders him unfit for the office.” Even Matt “what underage girls?” Gaetz is calling for Ziegler to step down.
I’m not well-versed on Florida politics, (maybe someone here can offer some enlightenment) but why Ziegler, and why now? Of course Republican hypocrisy is a well-known trait, but is there more to this story about why Florida Republicans have knives out for this guy? Surely it can’t be just a little rape accusation. That’s not even a minor blemish for the GOP (or their base voters) these days.
I’ve lost count of the number of GOP candidates and elected officials who have been credibly accused (or worse) of either committing or enabling (Hi, Representative Jordan!) acts of sexual assault or rape. Even the presumptive GOP presidential nominee has bragged about sexually assaulting women, has multiple credible accusations of rape against him, and has been found by a court of law to have raped one woman (journalist E. Jean Carroll). There’s a long list of Republicans who are cut from the same creepy cloth as Ziegler, but the Florida Republican Party doesn’t seem to be going after any of them.
So why go after Ziegler now?
