A thought about Ted Lasso

A thought about Ted Lasso…
We have come through a 25 year run of amazing television featuring a ridiculous run of well-written, compelling psychopathic and sociopathic characters. It started with Oz - wall-to-wall psychos subjecting victims to an unending string of unpunished cruelty. Then Tony Soprano. Dexter Morgan. Don Draper. Walter White. One highly-successful sociopath after another. (All White men, but that's another discussion) Each new show since that has made an impact seems to be trying to out-awful the last, with increasingly selfish, vicious, amoral and unremorseful characters.
The response to Ted Lasso is a strong reaction to this trend, and reflects a long pent-up need to see something in our culture that reflects not just kindness, but kindness rewarded. The praise the show received is possibly a bit disproportionate, but that only reflects how long this pent-up need has been unmet.
Will this lead to a string of new shows about kindness? Well, nothing is being written now because of the writer's strike. When they come back, will they pick up the Lasso banner, or go back to writing about telegenic evil people? Evil usually wins this battle, it would be silly to bet against it. Ted Lasso may end up the rare exception of a highly successful show that does not get replicated to death.
