Greetings friends, and welcome to another Saturday! We made it through another week, congratulations to us! As you all probably know by now, I read -a lot-. Novels, short stories, articles, blogs… anything I can either get read aloud, or make the print large enough. This week, I found a list of things that used to be illegal, but aren’t, and as I read through it, it made me realize, that some may be illegal again soon, so I decided some of this was worth sharing.
Interracial Marriage: In a lot of states, including where I grew up, Interracial Marriage was against the law, until 1967, when the SCOTUS heard Loving v. Virginia, and ruled such laws to be unconstitutional.
Woman in Pants: Early in the 20th century, women wearing masculine clothing was seen as inappropriate, or rebellious. In some places it was even against the law. But changing social norms have made such laws obsolete.
Birth Control: A law referred to as the Comstock Act made giving out birth control, or even information on such things illegal, in 1873. It was not until the mid 1960s that such foolish and prejudicial laws began to be repealed.
Dancing: Anyone who has seen the movie Footloose should know this one. No, it was not just made up for the movie. Luckily in the latter half of the 20th Century, such laws were done away with as too restrictive.
These are only a few, but if you are like me, you are seeing a trend. Too many in our current government have failed to learn from history, and here we are. As usual, I will leave the article below. And my thanks to the original author :)
Dumb Laws
