The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the front runners in the CA Senate primary are Rep Adam Schiff (D-CA) and former Los Angeles Dodger first baseman Steve Garvey, who is running as a Republican. Reps Katie Porter (D-CA) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) are currently in 3rd and 4th place, respectively.
In the primary, Garvey is favored by 27% of likely voters, Schiff 25% and Porter 19%. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) garners 8%, while 12% of likely voters pick a different candidate and 9% are undecided.
The results are based on an online poll taken February 22-27 by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and the LA Times. The poll results are stated to have a margin of error of 2 percent.
In California’s jungle primary, the top 2 finishers will be on the ballot in November. The CA primary is on March 5. In CA, every registered voter is sent a mail-in ballot and encouraged to vote early. Early voting has been underway for more than a month.
Schiff’s ads have targeted Garvey rather than his Democratic opponents, suggesting that he wants to consolidate Republicans around Garvey, rather than have to face a Dem in November.
Ironically, Barbara Lee has released a list of endorsements. Included on the list are Dusty Baker and Dave Stewart, two of Steve Garvey’s teammates on the 1981 Dodgers World Series championship team. It will be interesting to see who is on Garvey’s endorsement list.
