We’ve been having some beautiful last-days-of-winter here in Quincy, CA, and I’ve been getting out from time to time. Yesterday was the last day of Winter 2023-24, so that means something, right? Eh, no, not really, except that we humans are just pattern-minded. Anyway, I took a short bicycle ride, saw some some nice birds, and would like to share them with all of you.
The Daily Bucket is a nature refuge. We amicably discuss animals, weather, climate, soil, plants, waters and note life’s patterns.
We invite you to note what you are seeing around you in your own part of the world, and to share your observations in the comments below.
Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the phenological patterns that are quietly unwinding around us. To have the Daily Bucket in your Activity Stream, visit Backyard Science’s profile page and click on Follow.

I’ll remark that getting good focus when the bird is concealing itself in the branches is often a frustrating challenge, but very satisfying when you succeed. Enjoy.
White-crowned Sparrow, face-on, showing good view of the crown.
Golden-crowned Sparrow with its golden crown just coming in.
House Finch, female. A healthy and happy-looking bird.
Golden-crowned Sparrow. The color is in better with this one.
Sandhill Crane. There were actually three of them together, but I found it impossible to get them all in the frame and not totally obscured by the tree branches. This one came out o.k.
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Spring is in the air. Looking for love, maybe?
And found it!
Now it’s your turn. What’s been happening in your area, signs of spring? Let us know in the comments and please include your location and any photos you’d like to share.
