Like so many, my jaw dropped open at the spectacle of Katie Britt’s bizarro Republican response to the State of the Union address. One second she is a perky cheerleader for America, and the next second she is lamenting an apocalyptic, dystopian wasteland.
Anyone who has not seen the full video really should:
The NYT put it best:
With a sunny, inviting smile, Senator Katie Britt of Alabama welcomed Americans into her kitchen on Thursday night.
Many soon backed away nervously.
I write only because — despite the well-deserved internet crack-up over this — I think no one has captured the true analogy to the vibe going down here. She reminded me of the infamous Christopher Walken “watch scene” in Pulp Fiction. Like Ms. Britt in her suburban kitchen, Walken also invites us into a gauzy suburban tableau, with an open, engaging personality . . . only to strangely and suddenly devolve into a dark, scowling (and racist) figure. The effect is similarly startling, only at least the Walken piece was deliberately played for laughs.
Life imitates art. If you like the reference, a while ago I had a similarly obscure comparison involving Nancy Pelosi on January 6 called Nancy Pelosi is just as much a bad ass as Marc Anthony on HBO’s Rome. That one was even more direct in comparison.
God help us if these nuts regain power.
