So, anything happen today? Besides the solar eclipse? I’m sure it did, but if you’re like me and millions of others, today had only ONE news story. And so rather than write something non-eclipse related, I’m going to share some of my experience as well as a few of the photos I managed to get with no advance planning, and I hope you’ll share your experiences/photos in the comments!
Here in Boston, we were at about 93% of totality. I admit I had some FOMO about not having traveled somewhere to see 100% totality, but we made the decision to stay here and even without a corona it was pretty freeking amazing. We’d overordered eclipse glasses so at 8am I posted on our local Buy Nothing group and by 8:02 I had a dozen people wanting them. I’m glad that we gave six pairs away, and that we kept two extra… we saw our neighbors across the street and when they said they didn’t have glasses we invited them over and had an impromptu party!
I took all of my photos using my iPhone with an eclipse glasses lens covering the camera, while Mr. Brillig McGyvered a safe filter for his Actual Camera and used a tripod. All photos here are mine. Since I am terrible at embedding pictures in my diaries if I have text to add afterwards, please hop below the fold for my final thoughts and tonight’s Tops!
So that was our experience here at Casa Brillig. We had a phenomenal afternoon and while yes, seeing everyone’s photos and video from 100% totality was amazing, we’re content in our experience too! It was wild feeling the temperature drop even though the light was still ‘normal’ enough that if you had been hiding under a rock and didn’t know an eclipse was happening, you wouldn’t have noticed. I absolutely understand how early humans could have thought the world was ending then rejoiced as light triumphed over dark. I do NOT understand all the people out walking or driving, or playing basketball and turning down eclipse glasses because, and I quote, “eh, maybe my sisters want to see?” It was magical. I hope you got to see whatever was visible where you were, and I can’t wait to hear all about it in the comments!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down. From denig:
I know this submission is from a few days ago. It was a top comment from tonight that led me to it. But I thought it great. So maybe you'd consider posting it anyway? [brillig says: of course!] In a thread, started by Leftleaner, discussing why people came to DK and why they stayed. PadreMellyrn, among many great posts in that thread, summed it up perfectly.
