I know there have been plenty of diaries on the nuclear threat but few on the earthquake and tsunami that preceeded the nuclear threat and which has left tens of thousands dead and hundreds of thousands suffering.

This diary is intedend for anyone to post anything Japanese disaster related, either nuclear related or not.
Here are some updates:
Helicopters are now dumping water on the stricken number 3 reactor at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.
Japanese officials struggling to avoid full meltdowns have raised hopes of easing the crisis, saying they may be close to bringing power back to the plant and restoring the cooling systems.
A video of a dog in Japan who would not leave his injured friend
CNN and the UK Telegraph have both reported that the dogs have been rescued since the footage aired, and are both receiving veterinary care; the more seriously wounded dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito, while the protective spaniel-type dog is receiving care at a shelter in the same town.
Estimates are that half a million people in Japan are currently displaced by the disaster. Adding to their woes, an unseasonal snowstorm has sent temperatures plunging to below zero and blanketed much of northeast Japan in white.
12,000 people remain missing, feared dead, six days after the tsunami struck.
At least 87,894 buildings have been damaged by quake and tsunami, National Police Agency of Japan says.
At least 7,400 buildings were completely destroyed, public broadcaster NHK says.
