With the first breath of warmth that spread across the Bluegrass turflands, my gardening tools were unholstered. It was time for the backyard gardens, ponds and BBQs.
And with the April showers (and tornadoes in the background), we're off and running...
The strawberry plants are new this year and the flowers should have been pinched off so the plants could focus on growing without producing strawberries, but I couldn’t resist and let some of them bloom their heart out.
The garden soil was prepped last year with the straw method and this year it was a piece of cake to plant. The soil is rich and easy to work.
Now I just have to figure out how to co-mingle the flowers with vegetables into one garden. This is what is termed a “potage” or soup. It’s also known as a cottage garden. Herbs and flowers and vegetables all grown together in a ménage a trois of beneficial living arrangements that turn that frumpy vegetable garden into a thing of beauty as well as fruitful.
The pond is a work in very slow progress. A large circular dent in the backyard from the previous owner’s swimming pool will be converted to a small waterfall pond. Instead of hauling dirt in to fill it and cover it with grass, I will simply alter the outlines of the terrain and add a peaceful oasis.
And when those tomatoes and vegetables finally ripen, there will be a smoker BBQ grill to try out this year. Drying tomatoes on a smoker and then storing them in olive oil is the game plan and it comes highly recommended.
So, what’s happening in your backyards this year?
Now it’s on to the TOP COMMENTS OF THE DAY submitted from Kossack readers. THANK YOU very much to everyone who took the time to send in these most excellent comments to share with the DailyKos community.
From BentLiberal:
catnip makes an interesting comment about Frogs and Goats. You'll have to hit "Parent" twice to see the joke in the snark-filled diary Obama grapples with political fallout from mean Daily Kos diary by CaptUnderpants.
From BlackSheep1:
I'm nominating this comment by Johnny Sacks from "Atlas Shrugged" Goes Down in Flames; Producer Blames Media --of course! by Bob Johnson.
The comparison at the end is just too funny.
From blueoregon:
Gooserock has an excellent point in Our Brilliant President by Adept2U.
