In which the mysteries, location, and uses of the Hotlist are revealed!
Welcome, New (and old) Users. Your editor today is smileycreek, and along with my co-editor LaughingPlanet I am happy to welcome you to our ongoing Welcome New Users series.
Feel free to use this diary to ask any other questions. If I don't know the answers I'll go find 'em and bring 'em to ya! (wink wink)
Everyone is encouraged to review some of the previously written goodness that survives here in the DKos archives.

So, What's a Hotlist For?
Your Hotlist is a place to store links to diaries that you want to refer back to without taking up space on your own computer. This list is available for you any time you log on to Daily Kos regardless of what computer or browser you're using. Your Hotlist can now be updated far more easily than in the days of creaky old DK3.
Some reasons for hotlisting diaries:
* Saving an outstanding diary so you can savor it later
* Sparing yourself the hassle of trying to search for it later
* Having access to exceptional tables, graphs, recipes, or other information
* Bookmarking a diary for submission to the kOscar™ Awards (more on this later)
How do I Hotlist a Diary?
Simple-- just click on the Hotlist button (the Plus sign +) right after the diary title. A checkmark will appear over the plus sign, just as a checkmark appears over the star when you've Recommended a diary.
New feature: You can now make notes to remind you WHY you hotlisted this in the first place!
Now when you click the Plus sign to hotlist a diary, a box pops up where you can note your reasons for saving the diary.
Now-- how do you FIND your Hotlist?
Go to:
---> My Page
------> Following
-----> Hotlisted Diaries
------> Note (that you created) or Remove (diary from Hotlist)
How Do I Clean Up My Hotlist?
1) Refer to the screenshot above and you'll see a Remove tag to the right of each hotllisted diary. Clicking this will remove the diary.
2) Click on the diary itself and simply click on the check mark over the Plus sign. You will be asked if you want to remove the diary from your Hotlist.
In Other Cool Uses of Notes:
You can now also make notes on individual kossacks you are following to help you remember who they are. Which one has the pack of four slobberdogs big slobberdog? Which one whose diaries you always read did you run into at a gathering? Which one lives in your Congressional district? Now you can jot a permanent note to remind you:
A Word About the kOscars™
In answer to the title question, my hotlist is already burning up with nominations I'm hoping to submit for the 2011 kOscars™, and my favorite use of the Hotlist function last year was to save diary nominations for the second annual kOscar™ Awards.
However, unless someone steps up, there won't be a 2011 kOscar™ Awards.
LaughingPlanet literally dreamed up the awards series and did most of the heavy lifting organizing the many nomination, voting and final diaries.
LaughingPlanet has, however, retired from the series (it is a lot of work), although he has volunteered to advise anyone willing to produce and direct next year's awards. I lack the technical expertise to oversee the operation but will also gladly help out.
The awards can be taken on by an individual, or a Group could be formed where people could submit ideas and diaries throughout the year. But unless someone steps up the kOscars™ will remain but a bright footnote in Daily Kos history.
So-- think about it! Better yet, grab it and run with it!
NOTE: New Hide-Rate Pop-Up
Speaking of new pop-up boxes, here's the new instructions just installed in the Hide function. Be sure to read it before clicking OK on that Hide button:
If you're a new Trusted User and want to take part in community moderation (and no one says you have to!), check the FAQ's to learn ">when it's appropriate to Hide a comment. If you missed any of the new policy on mojo and Hide-Rates, check kos' recent diary on Mojo Recalculations.
So, come on in and feel free to grab hold of one of us and ask any questions about the site. If I don't know the answer I'll find out and get back to you. Remember, there are new people and shy people lurking here, so be patient and play nice!
