As many of the Minnesota Kossacks have mentioned, the Twin Cities press hasn't done much to hold Michele Bachmann accountable. But it completely fell down on Bachmann's comparing taxation to the Holocaust (h/t to Bill Kramer). Unless I've missed something, the only mention of this in the Star Tribune, Pioneer Press or Minnesota Public Radio has been the same as everywhere else--a regurgitation of the AP story. And unless I missed something in the transcript, Chris Wallace didn't even touch it on today's Fox News Sunday. That means it's up to us to hold the Mad Minnesotan accountable for this outrageous statement--which is even more so since it came on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
I'd been looking for an excuse to start my first Change.org petition, and this is a great one. Sign here--and spread it around.
For those who missed it, here's the full quote:
In a speech to New Hampshire Republicans, Bachmann recounted learning about a horrific time in history as a child — the Holocaust — and wondering if her mother did anything to stop it. She said she was shocked to hear that many Americans weren't aware that millions of Jews had died until after World War II ended.
Bachmann said the next generation will ask similar questions about what their elders did to prevent them from facing a huge tax burden.
"I tell you this story because I think in our day and time, there is no analogy to that horrific action," she said, referring to the Holocaust. "But only to say, we are seeing eclipsed in front of our eyes a similar death and a similar taking away. It is this disenfranchisement that I think we have to answer to."
It's hard to believe that anyone could possibly be that tone deaf--especially someone who is supposedly thinking about running for president. If Bachmann doesn't have anything in her to apologize, Boehner and Cantor need to show some leadership and make her do so.
