Ben Masel’s quilt - RIP, Ben
There is a setting for log cabin blocks called “Sunshine and Shadows” – the blocks are turned in such a way as to create alternating diamonds of light and dark. Kind of like life. Here is one from the University of Rhode Island’s collection:

Sunshine and Shadows
It takes light and dark to make a big visual impact. I think the best traditional quilt blocks use this to advantage.

Quilts are given in celebration of birth and weddings. They are also used as solace for the sick and for mourning.
