Via the
Duluth News Tribune:
Tarryl Clark, who tried to unseat Michele Bachmann from Congress in 2010, wants to take on Chip Cravaack in 2012.
Clark told the News Tribune on Saturday that she is filing papers with the Federal Elections Commission to seek the Democratic nomination for the 8th District seat and will send an e-mail and video to supporters on Monday announcing her intentions.
Clark and her husband, Doug, have purchased a condominium in Duluth where she will spend “a good chunk” of her time during the campaign, she said. They will maintain their residence in St. Cloud, Minn., where Doug Clark works. St. Cloud is just south of the 8th District border with the 6th District, where Clark won about 40 percent of the vote in her battle with Bachmann.
Clark raised a lot of money last cycle—$4.7 million—but that won't be repeatable without the Bachmann lightning-rod to fire up donors. There's also the matter of Clark's residence: These days, there are many districts where carpetbagging isn't generally a problem, but northern Minnesota's Iron Range is probably one of the places where it is still an issue.
It's also quite possible that Clark won't have the primary field to herself. Duluth City Councillor Jeff Anderson has been considering a run, and late last week he said he wouldn't seek re-election for his current job. And the linked article lists another half-dozen potential candidates here. But no matter who emerges as the Democratic nominee, and pretty much no matter what the new district lines wind up looking like, freshman GOPer Chip Cravaack will be a top target for Democrats this cycle.
