Our local paper shared this fine LTE today. Writer expresses clearly, more positively and with far less emotion than I would use, one of the greatest logic fallacies of all homophobes. I want to share it here with all of you so you could also use his premise whenever it's pertinent. Prior Letter Writer confused about Pedophilia...
Recently, an E-R letter writer paired the word perversion with the word gay in the same sentence. I would assume that the writer's intent was to convince us that gay people are perverted.I disagree with that pairing and conclusion.
Perversion is Jerry Sandusky going to church on Sunday and then raping a young boy in a Penn State locker room. Perversion is a Catholic priest saying Mass and then raping a young boy in a storage room. Perversion is a respected Scout leader taking troops on a campout and then raping a young boy in a tent. These are all stories taken from today's headlines.
Gay men are not perverts and they are not pedophiles. Gay couples — and families — are about love and affection, just the same as the rest of us. It is only our Puritanical-rooted culture that is obsessed with sexuality and associates a gay lifestyle with perversion.
Gay men and women are embedded in today's society at all levels. Many religions have accepted gays and lesbians as active partners in worship. They are your neighbors, co-workers, and community leaders.
Pedophilia, unfortunately, seems to also be embedded and accepted in our culture and it has been that way for many years. They are your neighbors, co-workers and community leaders.
Truthfully, how can one accept pedophiles and yet condemn gays and lesbians?
... and don't tell me we don't accept pedophiles. Just look how long it took to get Sandusky behind bars. How many pedophile priests are now behind bars? How about all the Scout leaders and Sunday School teachers? Let alone all the 'friends' and 'relatives' that prey on both young boys and girls? Statistics show that a minimum of 25%, in some cultures 50% of all girls suffer sexual abuse... yes in the US.
Attempting to equate adult consenual relationships of love, sharing, compassion with childhood sexual abuse is the perversion.
2:35 PM PT: Now that we have formally heard that John Fugelsang will be getting his own PrimeTime Current TV show. I hope he might use this idea in a segment. ""Fugelsang likes to say he’s in a unique position to take on religious right being the son of an ex nun and a former Franciscan brother. Get him to tell you about it sometime — it’s a great story."http://tinyurl.com/...
