Define Metaphor or Irony. Is it whose signs are made to stand even in Cleveland's taste of Sandy? That those Obama signs that didn't make it in the 80 mph winds still had their backbone, er base/ housing of the sign that you stick in the ground, just the plastic/paper had been plucked away? At any rate the title.
First, let me note, that anticipating the tragedy I do not personally think that we should attempt to politicize how Romney would fail. Then it simply looks like a Photo Op for the President. That is my humble opinion. As cynically it is the same to laud the president and present photos of his handling, looking just as political. People remember Katrina. We don't need to tell. People's lives may be ruined or lost (perhaps already) I do not believe they were sacrificed to help Obama show he can handle better. Let's applaud the President should he make good decisions, but Mitt is not part of the Story, nor should they have died for anything other than tragically or had lives lost for anything other than tragedy, not so pre-election we can be reminded of who wants to keep FEMA. In tase, good, but mocking Romney for trying, I think is a turn off. That is my opinion take or leave. /end that rant
Now, as I intended to Diary briefly. I am sure many of you have (or have family as i do) in harm's way. More so than Ohio. Although even here surprisingly it has been devastating. I went and saw at a park gigantic waves, felt the 70 mph winds, pain of the cold Rain. Got into my car and remembered who we as progressives seek to help (I hope). Those who cannot go back to a warm car. Those who live in shacks in Jamaica. Or below the poverty level who lose everything. We may complain about toughing out a power outage (here) but after it reminded me to keep in perspective.
Our power went out (250,000 people's did today/yest in Cleveland area) I first stopped by my father's to see how he was. To my surprise his Obama signs were weathering the storm, all 3. And his Sherrod Brown sign.
At my own house I was shocked to see (last night) my Sherrod Brown sign stuck in the ground. And before getting to it all of the Obama signs still there. Unfortunately at my own home, the content of the Obama Sign blew away. I will replace it today. However, to no surprise, and as I hope metaphorically, the base of the sign remained, my Obama sign's backbone.
That was at the beginning of our far off taste of a Hurricane. Below the "shape" this morning and to my surprise who if any signs remained.
In brief I woke up this morning to clear branches out of the way. See Highways closed in parts, See gigantic trees splintered.
Yet something struck me as I drove. I did not any longer see a single Romney sign amidst the carnage.
I did however see about Half the Obama signs, and about every Sherrod Brown sign.
I suppose for 1. Perhaps to an extent it is good for Halloween (if it happens) as we don't want the kids to be too scared going to houses that imply a Romney Presidency
2. I guess they don't Make Republican [signs] like they used to.
I had no doubt in an area that is probably red and was red in 08 (where I work not in Cleveland's County) that a massive Romney sign carried by a crain would be up. To my surprise it had been lowered or blown off and just sitting this one out on the sidelines.
Pic:(Normally much Closer to highway and prominently displayed so you can see from both sides) Looking a bit humbled:
As I got closer to the part nearing the Lake in this County, I expected to see none. I saw one (my drive is not far off the highway exist but I make it every day and see many usually).
This one: (looking not humbled but as if it has been through some rough weather withstood and stands where it always has able to stand up in an even worse place where I thought not possible, how it got and stayed there are improbably to begin with in such a Red area, then to add so close to the shore where the worst weather so improbably it remains undeterred to get its message out):
Now Define Irony, Metaphor . . . Feel free to post your tattered Obama signs that remain.
12:03 PM PT: Quick update as I implied elsewhere that we should not yet be discussing this in a politically divisive way. I received a response stating something like Romney had started to.
My response and to reiterate my serious point above (as we are in the midst and don't know how it will turn out, lets now hope for the best then see if it adds to the President's track record, and Romney makes himself a fool):
It is one thing to discuss the import of FEMA (if they do their job). It is another to reiterate a transparent image of Romney giving goods that no one cares about transposed against the President.
We did not Politicize Libya when it became a strength because Obama did.
Now opening a door to discussing what was not discussed (climate change and their stances) or if handled well adding to Record I get.
But a cynic looks at the President's actions and Diaries implying Romney is sending Caviar to "help" so u shouldn't vote for him is a turn-off until it's said and done.
I am not going there.
