Lost in the assault weapons conversation is just how destructive handguns are to society. With that in mind I have a very simple gun control policy proposal:
SHOTGUNS. THE END.
Shotguns are a suitable choice for any legitimate firearm use in a civilized society. Sorry, the rest have got to go.
Shotguns are unarguably the best weapon for home defense (and I'm not opposed to allowing shortened barrel length for tight quarters), and for hunting purposes can kill anything from a pheasant to a moose at 100 yards (while being far safer than a hunting rifle, who's misses fly miles away).
Shotguns by their nature, though, have limited capacity (5 rounds max typically), short range, and are hard to conceal, which makes them far less suited for mayhem.
While rifles and handguns might be fun for gun enthusiasts, outside of military and law enforcement uses their cost to society is simply too high to be an acceptable hobby.
Shotguns are good enough.
