Are you doing business now with Facebook and SEO services?
Thing change fast...really fast. When I was in college taking economics classes, my instructor was Professor Zubrow. He was considered to be the top economist in the state of Colorado. The legislature would always bring him in for guidance. There were a few thing he taught me in 1975 about the future we were headed for as a country.
First off he showed us with charts and graphs and whatever how America's economic world dominance after WWII peaked between 1969-1972. We were already heading down, according to him...though it didn't feel like it at the time to 18 year-old me. I'd worked all through high school and saved enough to pay for a full year's tuition, living in the dormitory and my text books. Sure, I went to the University of Colorado and was a resident, but still I'd been able to save enough for my first year of college.
The second thing he told us was that our generation would not be able to rely upon getting a career and having one job for our working years then have a pension to retire upon...as our parent's generation had. He said we should be prepared to have probably three different careers and/or jobs during our working years and that pensions wouldn't be paid entirely by our employers. He told us medical benefits would likely get smaller as the years went by.
He told us there would be more frequent and turbulent cycles of bubbles and busts in the future which would cause shrinking of the workforce during the downturns and likely less hiring once that was over. He also said emergence of new technologies would replace workers, especially robotics and computers. He even hinted there could be jobs leaving America and going overseas to other countries, especially blue collar jobs, which really hadn't started happening yet.
Another thing he told us to expect is that our generation would not probably exceed our parents' generation in getting ahead and that large numbers of us would actually see a decline in accrual of wealth, job security and retirement stability compared to mom and dad. Our generation was the one that would see things level off and even reverse in that regard and our children would experience a continuing decline.
Turns out he was spot on.
And Ronald Reagan, Newt Gingrich and the Tea Party hadn't even come along yet.
Smileycreek's been reading, well listening to an audio book, about this very phenomenon. It's terrific! The title is The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America written by George Packer. It follows different people in different careers as this takes place over the past three decades.
When I learned all Professor Zubrow taught me, I took it to heart. I decided the best thing I could do was to create my own business and way to make a living if I wanted some stability in my life. At the very least I would be my own boss. It was also apparent to me by what I learned then, that manufacturing in the USA would be hurt the most and jobs of the future would be in service industries because at least these couldn't be exported (I hadn't thought of phone-in services or computer services.) So, I became an Acupuncturist because I always wanted to be of service and it felt right. Plus it seemed a lot safer than getting a job working for someone else. I would be the only one who could fire me.
In the past year, however, things have changed a lot due to social media and search engines like Google, Bing, Yelp, etc. Normally smileycreek and I are "early adopters" when it comes to technological changes with the exception of getting smart phones. We've really had no great reason to get them since we have land phones at home and our office. We don't do road travelling and have no children.
For our business, we've always had an ad in the yellow pages and rely upon word of mouth to keep our practice hopping. As with any healthcare business, patients move out of the area and also pass away, so you always have to have new patients to make up for that. The way we've been doing business suddenly doesn't work any more, though it did for more than 26 years to this point. It didn't happen slowly either. It was pretty darned sudden.
No one uses the yellow pages much any more. Now businesses all have FaceBook pages and frequently their own web page and pay for search engine optimization (SEO) services to keep their business in the upper tier of internet searches. Until just recently, pretty much only folks who had companies entirely on the internet needed that. That's no longer the case. Brick and mortar businesses now must do the same. If they don't they lose ground fast against their competition, which is other brick and mortar businesses doing the same thing.
We don't have any of that right now and it is very, very apparent we MUST get on board. I'm responsible for missing the boat because I was out of action for several months last year. And it was precisely during my absence when this new way of getting your business known about out there took off. They say having your business on FaceBook is "like word of mouth times 100."
It has been interesting for me trying to get this going. I will definitely have to hire someone to host my web page, which has to be created, and do the SEO services. I can probably create an adequate web page, but will likely use help to make it interactive more than just a regular FB page.
Do you do business using the new and necessary paradigm?
