Another Transgender Woman has been murdered. This time in NYC.
HARLEM — A transgender woman who was savagely beaten over the weekend by a man shouting homophobic slurs in Harlem died of her injuries on Thursday, in what police are investigating as a hate crime, authorities said.
Islan Nettles, 21, was taken off life support at Harlem Hospital after she was declared brain dead from injuries she suffered in the attack, cops said. She had been clinging to life since being rushed to the hospital late Saturday night, police said.
She was out with friends and when they encountered a group of men while walking down the street, they were attacked. The men threw punches as well as homophobic slurs.
One man was arrested and was being held on assault charges. The police indicate his charges may be upgraded due to Islan's death from the injuries she recived.
Islan Nettles was on her way to being a fashion designer before this deadly encounter.
Domonique Newburn in Fontana was also murdered this week.
Officials are looking for suspect Dantjier Powell, an 18 year old San Bernardino resident. He is possibly trying to leave the state, maybe on a bus. He is described as a black male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 155 pounds with an average build and dark complexion. He is believed to be with Jamie Nicole Cotton, a 25 year old black female out of Highland. She is described as 5 feet 8 inches, about 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Chelsea Manning coming out of the closet after sentencing has also unleashed an abundance of Transphobic statements online and in the press. Sadly, even here on Daily Kos, like we need the hate coming from all directions.
