Do you have any old family scandals that can't harm anyone anymore?
I don't mean your twin sister's affair last year with a married person. I mean the older kind where there's nary a living soul who would give a damn.
One side of my family has them aplenty. Some originated in Victorian shame, and some from political necessity.
My great grandfather left this country with the law hot on his heels.
The old dust of decades or even centuries sometimes is blown away by unexpected events, and we may find ourselves somewhat transported back to another time and a different social reality. It happened to me earlier this week
The city of Vancouver unexpectedly contacted me a few days ago to say they'd soon be returning the 20 banker-sized boxes of historical documents I lent them about my great grandfather almost a decade ago. He had once been a U.S. expat who contstructed a political career in Canada while on the run from the law here. That was in the 1890s.
There are a lot of family secrets in those boxes from about 1880-1940s, but none of them covering the last sixty years at all. None of the adults they refer to are still living. Mostly they were born during the latter times of the Victorian era.
So what have I got? I've got a great grandfather who rebuilt his life in another country after running away from the law here. He married again in Canada while still married to my great grandmother here = bigamy. My great grandmother became an opium addict (sipping it with a spoon) in response.
One of her two sons ended up as a guard/newspaper editor at the Santa Anita Internment Center (read concentration camp) for Japanese-Americans during WWII. Sadly, the last one wouldn't be a big secret in most families in the 1940s, but in mine it was a cause of deep shame and a very hush-hush topic. That generation of my family had lost close friends in Spain fighting Fascism. The other side of my family had folks in concentration camps in Europe at the time. I share in the shame my family felt about one of our own's participation in the internment of American citizens of Japanese descent. At the same time, I have a feeling of pride that my grandfather knew that what his brother was doing was wrong, despite the apparent approval of the larger society (and despite my great-uncle's belief he had no way out). Shame and pride at the same time. I could go on and on (sometimes I do), but I think you get the point.
All the folks that lived before us really weren't two-dimensional figures. Trust me on this one. Despite such phrases as "simple, god-fearing folk," they all had their personality quirks. Isolated groups of humans may appear homogenous to outsiders for periods of time, but individuals within those groups have never been. Unique humans...our family trees are full of 'em. And they all messed up in some way, and then tried to hide it. It is what we do.
Japanese-Americans being round up for an uncertain fate
If I have a personal religion/philosphy, it involves a type of filial piety. On some level I have to assume that my ancestors walked around with a bit of myself in them, just as I walk around carrying some of them. They came first and I owe them (as I do future generations). For me that means the debt of rememberance. They lived and felt as I do when gazing at the stars or into the eyes of love. They cried and died as I will one day with my eyes turned to the ground. Maybe 200 generations of them between myself and the political assassignation of Juilus Ceasar. Maybe 400 between myself and the erection of the Egyptian pyramids. Maybe 800 between now and the first villages. The exact number isn't that important. All of them had their own scandals and secrets they tried to hide until the information, and later they themselves, were forgotten about. If I cannot remember all their deeds, the good and the bad ones, at least I can remember that they had them as part of their birthright as humans. Today I'm thinking about their less than stellar deeds. In my personal religion/philosophy, that doesn't dishoner them.
So what old family scandals are floating around in your head?
