Today is Labor Day. What' up?
We are not working today. We're chillin'...both figuratively and literally. The weather is unusually cool today...only 76 degrees at 12 noon with overcast skies. We even had a steady rain for a while last night which is not typical at all for this time of year.
I really don't have anything specific I wanted to talk about...however, I wanted to show some pics of things in our garden. This is what's growing around here in early September. Soon we'll plant our "cold weather crops" including five different types of lettuce, kale, beets, broccoli, spinach, chard, and onion and garlic sets. Around here we will be able to eat lettuce well into winter.
Here is what I saw two evenings ago when I lay on my back on the new bridge I built across the creek and looked up:
We'll get a nice bunch of pomegranates soon. They aren't ready yet. The way you can tell when they are is they start splitting open.
Our bell peppers are doing great. The second pic below is one of our yellow bell peppers.
We planted only two kinds of squash this year. One is a crook neck squash which is very productive, but not too much so like zucchini. Also we use the squash blossoms to make wonderful breakfasts...fill them with ricotta cheese and cook. The blossoms are like crepes.
The other squash we planted is a butternut squash. You'll see a lady bug larva in the first pic of the crook neck squash. I also included a close up of another in the third pic below. We are fortunate to have tons of lady bug larva to help deal with the tons and tons of aphids we get. The aphids still take over...so I just spray them off with the hose. That's all you have to do...no need for pesticides.
We have cucumbers, Eisley peppers (galore...do you have any idea how many jars of pickled Eisley pepper I've made so far?), limes and tons of cherry tomatoes too.
There are some things flowering right now...but I thought I wouldn't include pictures of those budding plants.
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of their evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, interesting videos, and so forth. Or just say "Hi" if you've had a long day and are too exhausted to participate more actively. We would also appreciate links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate.
Please note that pie fights will be unwelcome in this community, just as in most other series at DKos. There's lots of space at the rest of the site for fighting with other Democrats, progressives, and liberals, and we don't want those battles dragged into this community.
Finally, readers may notice that most who are posting diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but that definitely does not mean that newcomers will be excluded or unwelcome. We're happy to welcome guests to our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
KTK posts nightly at 5:00 Pacific, 6:00 Mountain, 7:00 Central, 8:00 Eastern.
