Remember that little Cheerios advert back in May? With the mom and the dad and the adorable little girl? You know, the one that suddenly went all viral-nova because apparently - to a certain "special" mindset - the fact that said dad was black, said mom was white, and the adorable little girl somewhere in-between transformed it from a commercial for cereal into a Harbinger Of All That Is Evil? Remember?
Well, then. As you prepare for Super Bowl Sunday, brace yourself to once again hear the sound of racists across this nation screaming in anguish. Because that "controversial" family is back, and this is going to be airing during the Big Game:
While I'm revolted in advance by the nastiness that will no doubt ensue from those whose cowardly hate is emboldened by the supposed anonymity of the Internet, I'm also deeply heartened by the fact that there was so much positive support the first time around that the producers decided to go back for more. We're a long way from truly being post-racial, but it does seem to me that the closer a thing is to dying, the louder and more desperately it screams. I'll try to hear said shrilling as an anthem of incremental progress... as I eat my Cheerios. :-)
