Texas Gov. Rick Perry in a Republican presidential debate.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry
If you thought that if there was one thing Texas Gov. Rick Perry was an expert on, it was nonsense, think again. Because while he's good at talking it, he's apparently not so good at identifying it. Perry is not happy that Democrats are talking about equal pay in his state's gubernatorial campaign. Well, maybe what he's really unhappy about is that Republicans are being forced to talk about it, and are doing such a bad job. But whatever the exact source of his discontent, it is strong:
“If they want to talk about substantive issues in Texas in this governor’s race, let’s talk about tax policy, regulatory policy, legal policies. But to go focus on this issue of a piece of legislation that already — that we already have laws that protect it, is nonsense,” Perry said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday.
Nonsense and not a substantive issue. Because we already have laws that protect equal pay, whereas apparently we do not have laws on tax policy, regulatory policy, or legal policies.

The thing is, Rick, sometimes you have one law, but times have changed or it turns out it's not working as well as possible, and you go back to the same issue, even though there's a law about it already, and you make the law stronger. Like, for instance, if you oppose women having control over their bodies, you might say "yes, we already have a forced ultrasound law, but we would also like to have a law that closes most of the abortion providers in the state." And if you are a woman who would like a better chance at being paid fairly, you might say "yes, it is illegal to discriminate and pay me less than my male coworkers, but being as it still happens routinely, I would also like to be able to find out what my coworkers make without employer retaliation and know that if I discover discrimination, my employer might actually have to pay."

Crazy talk, I realize.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
