The open primary on June 3 promises to be one of the most contested primaries ever in the Greater Los Angeles area or anywhere for that matter.
Last month we had David Kanuth meet, greet and speak at our meeting. He is running for US Congress for CA-33. This district has 18 candidates (after 3 dropped out) the most ever for a single congressional district (prove me wrong please). This was Henry Waxman's district until he announced his retirement in January.
On May 24 we have not one but two speakers. First Betsy Butler, she is running for California Senate for CA-26, a district with 7 candidates. That day she is participating in a debate organized by the League of Women Voters and she will drive from Torrance to downtown LA as soon as the debate is over so IMO she'll be at Casey's Irish Pub at 3PM. Selfishly I must say that I contacted Betsy originally to find out her position on Single Payer, she is a big supporter.
After the League of Women voters debate for the senatorial district is over, there is another for CA-33. Marianne Williamson will join us after this second debate is over. I expect her to make it to Casey's around 4:30-5PM depending on traffic. There is plenty of parking and mass transportation arond Casey's. Marianne is running as an independent but is a life long Democrat and she will caucus with them. I diaried about her movement to get more women involved in politics before and about her campaign and she did speak at Drinking Liberally when I invited her. Her big issue is money out of politics through a constitutional amendment.
And just today the Marianne Williamson campaign confirmed that Alan Grayson will accompany her to our meeting. Alan is a big Marianne supporter and of course we all know him as a prolific Kossack. I had the pleasure of meeting him recently at a salon and he exceeded my expectations as a speaker and a political leader. We can hold 50+ people at Casey's so I hope we can have a great meeting. So help us get the word out. IMO there are thousands of registered Kossacks in Greater Los Angeles. The Kossack meetings are becoming a hot item.
Then on May 31st, the next Saturday, we have a special meeting where two more speakers will join us; Matt Miller running for CA-33 and none other than Sandra Fluke running for state Senate for CA-26. This meeting starts at 2PM.
Matt Miller is a famous radio personality, he hosts Left Right and Center. He reached out to us proving that LA Kossack meetings are becoming hot. He is one smart guy. He is running as a moderate Democrat.
And the icing on the cake for this last meetings before the primary is Sandra Fluke, yes the Sandra Fluke who stood up to Rush Limbaugh. She almost threw in her hat in the ring for the CA-33 district but she decided to run for CA Senate instead and again selfishly I asked and she turns out to be a Single Payer supporter.
CA-33 and CA-26 are overlapping districts from Malibu to Palos Verdes and from Santa Monica to Hollywood. Needless to say I believe that if you are a Kossack in the Greater Los Angeles area, specially if you live in the West Side, you have to make an effort to show up.
