A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Merry Monday and welcome to the working week.
What was your first job for pay?
I never had the chance to do most of the ordinary things kids do to earn money.
I wanted a paper route. I thought it seemed cool. Until I realized it meant getting up early in the morning, in the dark, to go to some corner to pick up papers and get them to everyone's door before 7 in the morning.
Worse, it involved making the rounds on Fridays to hear people turn off the TV and pretend they weren't home when you knocked, or open the door and make excuses about why they didn't have the money that week.
By the time I was old enough to have a paper route, most of the newspaper delivery in my neighborhood was being done by adults. Since an adult had to make the collection rounds with you, and and adult had to have a car to take you to the distribution point in the morning...they eventually cut out the middleman of the child and just did the routes themselves.
Babysitting wasn't my thing either because I knew nothing at all about caring for children. I was the baby of the house everywhere I ever lived except for a few months when my mom and I briefly shared an apartment with a cousin and her three children all under 5. But after that I didn't even get a chance to be around younger children much, so I had no opportunity to acquire babysitting skills. That money making possibility was out.
Never got an allowance either. Definitely missed out there. I didn't even know there was such a thing as allowance—I never had friends who got allowances until I was well into my teens. Apparently it was not a working class thing. When I was really little and times were flush, mom would give me a little money occasionally for doing chores around the house. But later when we were scraping by and living on our own, my chores were my way of pulling my weight in the household and helping out my single working mother.
My first regular hours kind of job was volunteer work with Head Start when I was 14. I thought it was a paying gig when I signed up for it, but I was too young to work those hours legally. By the time I found out it was a volunteer job I was already hooked on the experience. I was shocked to learn for the first time that some kids had no books at all in their homes, when I had always been surrounded by books. Some of them were depending on Head Start for their breakfast and lunch, but no matter how bad things got with my mom's finances we always had a refrigerator full of food. I liked playing games with them, stacking blocks with them, reading to them. One unexpectedly cute part of the job was telling them the names of foods that were new to them. Mandarin oranges, maraschino cherries, delicious prunes—then I had to explain that "delicious" was not part of the actual name of the prunes, it was just something the teachers had said to encourage them to taste a food they were unfamiliar with.
I got my first job for pay the next year. My mother was proud. I was growing up! But the job was BORE. ING. Just filing and alphabetizing and some phone answering at an office that was part of the D.C. Government. But the fact that I had proved myself at Head Start the previous summer gave me a leg up on other kids who wanted the same job. I had already proved I was capable of showing up on time every day in appropriate clothes, which was more than a lot of other kids were able to do. Plus my older cousin worked in the same office and she kept an eye on me. There were long stretches of time with nothing to do. I was bored out of my mind, but it was money. I was able to help my mom buy groceries, and still have enough left to buy science fiction anthologies and novels, and get the singles and albums of all my favorite recording artists. That was what mattered most to me at the time.
Did you have a paper route? Babysitting jobs? Did you shovel snow or do yard work for your spending money? Did you scoop ice cream or flip burgers for extra cash? Maybe you were a waiter at a real restaurant a step up from fast food. Did you work in a grocery store moving boxes and restocking shelves, or in a department store folding sweaters and rehanging coats? Or something a little bit cooler, like being a lifeguard at a pool or beach? Did you just have a boring office job like mine? Did you enter the military as a teen? Were you able to avoid teen jobs and not start working for pay until you were an adult? Are you living off your luxurious inheritance and not working even now? (You may not want to admit to that, since a lot of folks will have their hands out...)
What was your first job for pay?

by John Crapper ♥ for Seattle and Puget Sound Kossacks
Organizer John Crapper completed another meet-up, from his agenda:
Next, I updated the group on our efforts to identify campaigns we would like to assist in the upcoming elections. There are three that have been under active discussion but nothing has been firmly decided. We all agreed it was important to pick races that would help Washington Democrats regain control of the Senate.
Next, I asked for ideas, suggestions and assistance identifying future guest speakers. In connection with that I urged all to invite their friends to become Kossacks and join us to enhance our clout.

LarisaW, President of
Progressive Radio Northwest (PRNW), was in attendance. She is leading an effort to bring back progressive radio to the NW.

by Avilyn ♥ for New Jersey Kossacks
The New Jersey Kossacks held their inaugural meet-up on June 14, 2014. Thanks so much to Avilyn for taking up the reins and leading this important group. She noticed in all of the Christy diaries that many New Jersey folk came out of lurking or signed up to comment. She was motivated by this to start this group. I'm glad because there's a lot of work to do in New Jersey. I also noticed in her start-up diaries that many people couldn't attend this event but wanted to be invited to the next event. She had 18 Kossacks sign up with her first announcement of the new group. This is excellent and I'm sure there are more New Jersey Kossacks out there.
Here's the group photo:
