A video IS worth a thousand words.

In short, CNN captured a Ferguson police officer calling protestors "fucking animals."
EDITED TO ADD: I am in no way excusing the looters. They always show up in these sorts of situations. But this cop seemed to toss everyone into the same category with his comment. You have legitimate anger out there. Pain too. Lot's of it. Seeing these people as human beings, even the ones who are committing crimes, is essential!
When a group of people's humanness is stripped away, along with their dignity and basic rights, is it any wonder that their lives aren't considered as valuable as others? And once their humanity has been stripped, killing them isn't much of a crime, is it? This cancerous thinking has a tendency to bleed into others.
But this isn't the first time this particular 'flavor' of racism has reared its ugly head. Just recently, it came from a surprising source: Book and movie lovers.
Case in point. I'm sure you recall what happened during the movie debut of the bestselling novel, THE HUNGER GAMES. Angry racist fans with obvious reading comprehension problems, took to twitter in droves over the casting of a young actress of color in the role of Rue.
For the record, Rue, a Hunger Games female character was described in the book as:
"….a twelve-year-old girl from District 11. She has dark brown skin and eyes, but other than that's she's very like Prim in size and demeanor…"
In response to the casting director's decision to follow the author's description, angry racists took to twitter with a vengeance:
@jashperparas wrote: 'Kk call me racist but when I found out rue was black her death wasn't as sad #ihatemyself
@freakinej wrote: HOW IN THE OWRLD ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE RUE A FREAKIN BLACK BITCH IN THE MOVE?!?!?!??! loll not to be racist buuuuuut…..I'm angry now ;o
@Clif_Ford_Kigar: Sense (ibid) when has Rue been a nigger

The most telling one was the first. The fact that Rue's dark skin made her death a bit less tragic to this person is tragic in itself. Think about that. I mean, really think about that.
Let it sink in.
Couple that with an unsympathetic cop calling a group of people in obvious pain and anguish "animals" and what do you have?
Devalued life.
Funny thing is, blatant disregard for human life is a trait found in wild animals rather than human beings. So if anyone is an animal, it's the cop in the video and the idiots who tweeted about Rue.
Which is why scenes like the one below are still necessary.
To me, those who cannot bring themselves to feel sympathy or empathy for other innocent human beings are the animals.

Bring it!” You can hear it in the video above, with the expletive censored out, at 00:15. Ferguson’s mayor James Knowles tells CNN, “The officers did their best. They’re only human.”
