Screen grab from my camera of the "gun range" being torn down and loaded up. Now it is time for the law to come down.
Glorious day. The ill-conceived "gun range" has been torn down... in front of 5 TV cameras. Now it is time for the law to come down. We will keep the pressure on; thank you for all your support and help. This has been a great team effort. Here is a blurb from our community PR on the matter (there are no fair use issues since I wrote this):
Mr. Joey Carannante has agreed, per his statements this morning on radio program 102.5 FM's The Bone with Mike Calta, to dismantle his "gun range." Shooter's World of Tampa has graciously offered Mr. Carannante a one year free membership at its commercial gun range -- a facility designed for safe operation of firearms and dedicated to promote gun safety. We thank Mr. Carannante for his decision to keep children safe. We further thank you, the media, for raising awareness and for our concerned public officials for their continued swift action.
"While our neighborhood breathes a sigh of relief, residential gun ranges remain a threat to all families and citizens of Florida," commented Patrick Leary, a neighbor. "Until the law is changed by legislators at the state level and signed by Governor Scott, we urge all Floridians to keep pressing."
Currently, several residential gun ranges are in operation throughout the state, including several others in Pinellas County. Additionally, homes are being hit by bullets, even by trained off duty officers practicing their skill in their backyards, such as the incident in Lithia recently. No charges have been filed there, and no charges have been filed either in the Christmas day killing of a Florida resident in his back yard in Volusia County. So not only is this activity still legal, when things go wrong, including death, no one is held responsible for his negligence -- there is no personal responsibility.
Thu Feb 05, 2015 at 6:02 AM PT: I'm looking for a little (well, maybe a lot) of help getting a simple website set up. The petition URL is too arcane. I've secured www.frontyardgunrange in most of its variants and I just want to put up a message with links to the petition, the story, and for community feedback and updates. Anyone skilled and willing, please send me a direct message.
