Ralkina Jones ... alive
Sigh.
Ralkina Jones appeared in good health on Saturday when her sister visited her at Cleveland Heights jail.
By Sunday morning, Jones was dead. Her family is waiting for answers.
The 37-year-old mother of one was found dead at the jail at about 10 a.m.
Even though her ex-husband
refused to press charges after he and Jones fought in a local grocery store parking lot, she was arrested and taken to jail anyway last Friday evening. Conflicting reports are coming out on Ralkina's condition inside of the jail, but her sister said she was fine and in good spirits when they talked on Saturday.
Ashford said Jones was doing fine when she saw her and talked to her on the phone the day before.
"She was perfectly fine. She didn't complain of nothing, saying she was hurting or anything," Ashford said.
Jail officials are now stating that Jones appeared sluggish and may have had problems with her blood sugar, but have not yet stated what treatment she received.
The bigger issues are these ...
Too many people are being arrested. If Jones' ex-husband didn't want to press charges, her arrest could've been avoided.
Jails are terrible hospitals and are doing an awful job caring for people with physical or mental health emergencies.
Too many people are dying in police custody, seemingly of avoidable deaths and often under terrible, even criminal circumstances. An astounding 346 people died in Florida jails and prisons last year alone.
