After his comically badly timed promise to delay the big government funding bill in the Senate—a promise made from a campaign stop in Iowa while the Senate was moving along without him—Rubio skipped the vote.
The Florida Republican, who is running for president, was the only 2016 contender to miss the vote, which is the Senate's final vote of the year.
Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), three other presidential candidates, all voted against the the legislation.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a fourth GOP presidential candidate from the Senate, backed the bill.
But it's okay, because he issued a press release. He says:
I strongly oppose this bill because it keeps spending money that we don't have, grows our debt, and concedes far too many of President Obama's and liberal Democrats' big government spending priorities.
He just didn't oppose it strongly enough to actually go to Washington to vote against it. That didn’t escape the notice of fellow Republicans.
