NBC News reported around 1am EDT on June 8, 2016:
President Barack Obama called former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday to congratulate her on "securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic nomination for president," according to a statement from the White House.
Obama also spoke with Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Clinton's last remaining opponent, the statement said.
"The president congratulated both candidates for running inspiring campaigns that have energized Democrats, brought a new generation of Americans into the political process, and shined a spotlight on important policy ideas aimed at making sure our economy and our politics work for everybody, not just those with wealth and power," the statement said.
The White House characterized Clinton's campaign as "an extension of her lifelong fight for middle-class families and children."
