Oh. The horror. When asked about possible Clinton Vice Presidential picks, John Lewis wondered if America would accept an all female ticket. Can you imagine? Glass ceilings are sooo easy to break that of course we can shatter two at once without a second thought. Easy peasy. It may have taken almost two and a half centuries to get a female nominee for President but now that we “vagina voters” made it happen, sexism is over! The War on Women in America is over! We live in a post-misogyny society!
Throughout the primary, Clinton supporters regularly pointed out misogyny only to be smacked down and belittled.
Vagina voters? Whores? Bought and paid for? Playing the ‘Woman Card’? Calling a Progressive titan a ‘bitch’? Throwing bills at a candidate like she is a stripper? Harassing women online? Laughing that a candidate’s cheating husband didn’t even want her? Launching harassment campaigns against groups fighting for women’s rights? Claiming they deserved it for endorsing Clinton, a woman and women’s rights champion herself? Nitpicking a former First Lady’s/Senator’s/Secretary of State’s/Global Humanitarian’s every word, every tonal inflection, every outfit, every thought, every action? Goldwater Girl? #WhichHillary? Shrill? Like Eve, responsible for all national and international sins over the last three decades? Uninspiring? Unqualified? Untrustworthy? Unlikable? She wouldn’t be anywhere if she wasn’t married to Bill?
Don’t be silly. None of that was rooted in misogyny.
John Lewis wondering aloud if America — a country that pays women less than men for doing the same job, a country that regularly seeks to deny women the right to control their own bodies, a country that lags decades behind even Pakistan in allowing a woman to get close to the highest office in the land — would be able to accept two strong women on the ticket when it has never even had one before? Yeah. That is what we should be mad at.
It took the highest court in the land to give women in 26 states a chance to control their own bodies again today. And people are outraged because John Lewis pointed out that America has sexism problems?
Seriously?
I stand with John Lewis. America has sexism problems. Big ones. Don’t bury them. Don’t deny them. Don’t erase the women’s struggle. Shine a light on it. Name it. Fight it.
Thank you, John Lewis. Thank you, Elizabeth Warren. Thank you, Hillary Clinton.
