It’s been a combination of absurd and tragic this week. It would be nice to go even a week without some terrible tragedy happening in the world, but that doesn’t seem to be possible, at least not this summer. In the absurd category is Trump’s selection and disastrous announcement of Mike Pence, unpopular governor of Indiana, as his choice for VP. Any of Trump’s finalists would have been bad, but Pence is particularly noteworthy for being hostile toward institutions that provide for women’s health.
Not surprisingly, it sounds as though Trump’s press conference introducing Pence was as disastrous as the rest of the rollout to this point.
Now that Trump has made his selection, the speculation about Hillary Clinton’s running mate is really heating up. The picks I would most like to see? Elizabeth Warren or Tom Perez. Elizabeth Warren is already ready to go to bat against Pence.
I will again go on record as saying that of the names discussed for VP, there’s no one Hillary Clinton could pick that would really be bad. I have issues with Tim Kaine, mostly that he’s not fully pro-choice and he’s somewhat boring, but if Hillary thinks he is the one best suited to step in if something happens to her, I’m not going to second-guess her. I also have issues with Julian Castro involving his lack of experience. However, both would bring positives to the campaign as opposed to weighing it down.
That said, pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease choose Warren or Perez, Future Madame President!
Yes, I said Future Madam President because I don’t for a minute think Trump is going to beat her. Some polls may have tightened due to the negative media bombardment about the email faux scandal, as well as poor methodology (looking at you, Quinnipiac), but even at her worst, Hillary Clinton is still winning. I won’t focus on the polls until after the Democratic National Convention, and maybe not until September, when large chunks of voters supposedly start to pay attention.
The news of this week has been moving by so fast that I almost forgot to mention one of the most note-worthy aspects:
Bernie finally endorsed Hillary, so the unifying already underway will now accelerate. And not a moment too soon!
Finally, yet another atrocious Hillary Clinton hashtag, #ThingsHillaryWillNeverHave, is trending on Twitter. Let’s turn it into something positive.
