So I stepped on my cat’s tail on Thursday (he’s fine) and I fell down. Immediately, I felt a major pain in my foot and it began swelling right away. I called my dad, he took me to urgent care. They believed I had a mild fracture. That was worrying enough. I was given an orthopedic shoe and told to take off the next few days of work.
Today, I saw an orthopedist and found out it was actually much worse. “Devastating” was the word he used. I severely fractured the three bones leading to the front of my leg. And I need surgery.
I’ve never had surgery before. I have insurance. And it’s good insurance, but I have no clue whether or not it will cover it all or how much of it. On top of that, I’ll be out of a work 1-2 weeks or more, and my sick leave/annual leave will only cover 2-3 weeks and then zippo, I’m done. I am single, live alone and depend solely on myself for EVERYTHING. Frankly, I don’t have much in savings.
To say I’m freaking out a bit is putting it mildly. My sister, brother-in-law and dad will help with groceries, laundry, etc. But I’m pre-emptively worried about finances and little things that may screw me over all because my cat was underfoot at the wrong moment. I see the surgeon tomorrow and hopefully will know more… but, I’m scared. I’m in my early 40’s and I’ve never had to deal with anything like this before. On one hand, that makes me incredibly lucky. On the other hand, I don’t know what to now.

Wow, thank you all so much. I wrote down a bunch of questions. Called and left a message for HR, and feel much more prepared. One thing—unfortunately, I can’t remote work from home with my job. It’s not possible, but such is life. Hopefully, I’ll be OK and it won’t overwhelm me financially. Thank you all so very, very much!
